縱 is composed of糸(silk or thread) and 從(to go after). 糸 has the meaning of tying or restriction, 從 has already meant going along, so 縱means lack of restriction. On the other hand, when someone follows another person, they will go vertically, so 縱 is also used to describe something vertical.
