纍 is composed of 畾 (pile, thunder) and the radical of 糸 (silk, thread). 畾 depicts three wheels, and because its form resembles a small mound or pile built by repeated stacking, it extends to convey the idea of repetition or “many times”. 糸 depicts a bundle of silk threads bound together and carries the idea of winding or entanglement. The rope must be wound around it multiple times, and therefore 纍 combines the meanings of binding and winding.
