紅 is composed of the BuShou of 糸(silk) and 工(work). 工 is the picture of a shovel, which has the meaning of production, 糸 means woven silk fabric. The original meaning of 紅 is the feminine arts such as needlework, weaving or sewing, since ancient Chinese like the color of red(blood) and produce many red woven silk fabric, so 紅 is also used to represent the color of red.
