綠 is composed of the radical of 糸 (silk) and 彔 (carve wood). 糸 represents silk fabrics, while 彔 depicts a water-drawing device set up over a well, signifying well water. Because of the moss inside the well, the well water takes on a color like that of green grass and leaves. Therefore, 綠 was used to denote silk fabrics of this color, and later came to refer to this color in general.
