信 is composed of the BuShou of人(man) and言(speech). Ancient Chinese is very cautious in speaking, once something has spoken out, it must be got done, therefore, speech of a man is credible. On the other hand, in the past, communications between people are mainly speech since transmission of letter is difficult at that time, so 信 also has the meaning of message.
