亾 depicting a person fleeing into a corner or wall, originally signifying escaping, fleeing, and losing or disappearing. Because running away or going into exile was a dangerous endeavor carrying a high risk of death, 亾 naturally extended to mean dying or perishing. Today, 亾 is no longer used independently, as its original forms and meanings have been fully taken over and replaced by 亡.
