佛

Buddha

佛 is composed of the radical 人 (person) and 弗. 弗 depicts two wooden posts tightly bound with ropes and carries the meaning of correcting or straightening. Therefore, 佛 conveys the idea of a person who has reformed. After a person reforms, their appearance remains the same, yet their character differs from before. From this, 佛 extended to the meaning of resemblance or similarity. However, this sense was later taken over by the character 佛 itself. Nowadays, 佛 is used to refer to Buddha, who founded a religion and is regarded by his followers as an enlightened one who has realized the truth of the universe and human life.
