僮 is composed of the radical of 人 (man) and 童 (child). Because the original meaning of 童 was a male slave, but over time it evolved to mean children or youth in general, 僮 was explicitly created to clearly preserve and carry on its original sense of a young servant, page, or enslaved boy.
