漠 is composed of the BuShou of 水 and 莫. 莫 depicts the lowering sun being covered by grass, light dims at sunset and will be gone very soon, so 莫 also has the meaning of dried up or exhausted. Water is the spring of life, all creatures needs water, the place will be barren and deserted.
