涸

dry

涸 is composed of the radical 水 (water) and 固 (ancient). 固 carries the sense of being hard, solid, and firm. When a river or body of water completely dries up, it recedes to expose the hard, solid riverbed underneath; thus, 涸 was formed to represent drying up, desiccating, or being drained of water.
