津 is composed of the radical of 水 (water) and 聿 (pen). 水 is a depiction of a river, while 𦘒 is a pictograph of a hand holding a brush. Therefore, 津 conveys the idea of poling across a river, and its original meaning is a ferry crossing. Later, it came to broadly refer to all major thoroughfares, and also means juice or fluid.
