求 is a pictograph depicting multiple animal hairs woven and linked together. Its original meaning was a fur coat, a sense later taken over by the character 裘. Because fur garments were extraordinarily precious in ancient times, they became something everyone strived to search for and longed to possess during the harsh winter. Thus, 求 came to signify needing, seeking, or striving to obtain.
