榜 is composed of 木 (wood) and 旁 (side). 旁 refers to the wooden stock around a prisoner's neck, which was crafted from a square wooden board. Therefore, the original meaning of 榜 is a wooden board or plank. In ancient times, wooden boards were used for public announcements or as oars for boats.
