檀 is composed of 木 (wood) and 亶 (true, real). 亶 is composed of 㐭 (granary) and 旦 (dawn), conveying the image of a granary built on flat, open land. Since granaries are used to store grain, the construction materials must be hard and capable of emitting a fragrance that repels insects. Therefore, 檀 is used to represent a type of tall, fragrant hardwood tree (arbor) with dense, durable timber.
