glutinous millet

朮 depicts a hand gathering grain. Its original meaning is a type of sticky grain, but this sense was later taken over by the character 秫. In ancient times, sticky grains were mostly gathered by hand and were not harvested on a large scale with tools like ordinary rice. Nowadays, 朮 is no longer used independently and only appears as a component in other characters.
