柲 is composed of 木 (wood) and 必 (must). 必 conveys the idea of tightly gripping the wooden handle of a dagger-axe, and its original meaning is the handle of a weapon. However, as 必 later developed other meanings, the character 柲 was separately created to express that original sense.
