株 is composed of 木 (wood) and 朱 (vermilion). 朱 depicts a tree with a mark painted on its trunk, and its original meaning is the trunk. However, as 朱 developed other meanings, the character 株 was separately created to take the place of that original sense, and it is also used as a measure word for plants and trees.
