countryside, territory

啚 is composed of 囗 (enclosure) and 㐭 (granary). 囗 is a pictograph of an enclosure and indicates city walls, while 㐭 is a pictograph of a granary. Therefore, 啚 conveys the idea of a granary outside the city walls. In ancient times grain was harvested from the fields and stored in granaries, which stood not far from the open fields; from this, 啚 came to mean countryside or territory. These two meanings were later taken over by 鄙 and 圖 respectively.
