哲 is composed of 折 (bend, break) and 口 (mouth). 折 is the picture of an ax cutting off a tree, means separating, thus extends to the meaning of problem solving. The lower part of 哲 was 心 (heart) before, but it had been replace by 口. Humans usually solve the problem by words.
