吻 is composed of 口 (mouth) and 勿 (do not). 勿 depicts a knife actively dividing an object. Because an object must come into contact with the blade edge in order to be severed, it extended to mean contact. Therefore, 吻 came to represent the lips, which frequently come into contact with each other, and later also came to mean kissing.
