瞳
pupil of the eye
瞳 is composed of 目 (eye) and 童 (child). While 童 originally denoted a young slave or child, children naturally lack body hair, which extended to convey the sense of being bare, open, or empty. 瞳 uses this concept of an empty opening to describe the aperture at the center of the eye—the pupil—which can contract and dilate.
