怒 is composed of 奴 (slave) and 心 (heart). 心 represents emotions, while 奴 refers to a person who has lost their freedom and is forced into labor. Stripped of liberty and subjected to servitude, one's heart is bound to be filled with resentment and fury; thus, 怒 came to denote anger and rage.
