悖 is composed of the radical 心 (heart) and 孛 (flourish). 孛 is formed from pictographs of grass and an infant, both of which grow rapidly, extending to the meanings of being unrestrained and contrary or rebellious. Rebellious behavior is not something everyone can act upon; often, people merely harbor contrary thoughts in their hearts.
