悍 is composed of the radical 心 (heart) and 旱 (drought). 旱 depicts raising a shield toward the sun, which can be understood as resisting enemies. To resist enemies, one’s heart must be brave, but if excessive, it can become ferocious or violent, as represented by 悍.
