基 is composed of 其 (its) and 土 (earth). 其 is a pictograph of a winnowing basket. A winnowing basket can blow away the lighter chaff and leave behind the heavier grain. Earth is heavier than ordinary things. Therefore, 基 conveys the idea of the soil that sinks to the very bottom layer, and means foundation, base, or root.
