增 is composed of 土 (earth) and 曾 (once). 土 depicts a mound of dirt stacked upon the ground, while 曾 is a pictograph of a multi-tiered steamer pot. Because both components share the core concept of stacking, layering, or building upward, 增 was formed to mean to add, augment, or increase.
