垮 is composed of 土 (earth, soil) and 夸 (praise). 土 is a pictograph of a mound of earth or mud hill, while 夸 is a pictograph of a person crossing over an obstacle. If the obstacle is a mud hill, one can simply push it over and topple it. Therefore, 垮 is used to mean collapse or topple.
