埋 is composed of 土(earth, clay) and 里 (residence, hometown). 里 means the place where people live together. In order to safeguard life and property, people will live together deep inside the places surrounded by natural barriers, so 里 also has the meaning of burying. If ancient Chinese wanted to hide something, they would cover it up with mud.
