壓 is composed of 厭 (loathe) and 土 (earth). 厭 carries the meaning of satiety. After eating one’s fill, the stomach is packed with food and produces an uncomfortable pressing force. This force is applied from above and is strong enough to deform a clod of earth. Therefore, 壓 is used to represent this sense of pressing or pressure.
