gather

簇 is composed of the radical of 竹 (bamboo) and 族 (clan). 族 conveys the idea of many people holding arrows and gathering under a banner to resist external aggression, and already carried the meaning of gathering or clustering. Later, as 族 developed other meanings, the character 簇 was separately created to take its place. Bamboo grows in dense clusters, thickly packed together.
