籬 is composed of the radical of 竹 (bamboo) and 離(separate). 離 means to separate or to part, and the purpose of a fence is to divide or separate spaces; in ancient times, such fences were mostly built with bamboo, thus 籬 refers to a bamboo fence or hedge.
