篩 is composed of the radical 竹 (bamboo) and 師 (teacher). 師 means a person with specialized skills or expertise; such people are selected through a process of eliminating and choosing from many candidates, and are superior to ordinary people. Therefore, 篩 is used to represent a bamboo utensil with fine holes that can separate particles of different sizes and select the most suitable ones from among them.
