婁 depicts a woman gathering her hair into a bun with her hands. When binding a bun, one gathers and layers strand after strand of loose hair; although the bun stands high, its interior is only a hollow space. Therefore, 婁 means both to layer or pile up and to be hollow. Nowadays 婁 is rarely used independently and serves only as a component in other characters.
