媒 is composed of 女 (woman) and 某 (certain, obscure). 某 serves as a pronoun for a person. In ancient times, women did not freely appear in public, and marriages were arranged through intermediaries. These intermediaries who facilitated marriage arrangements were called 媒, and the term later extended to refer to anything that connects two parties.
