烹

cook

烹 is composed of 亨 (prosperous) and the radical 火 (fire). 亨 is a pictograph of an ancient ancestral temple and represents the offering of sacrifices, while 火 means to heat. It was commonly believed among the people that the life of ancestors in the underworld after death was no different from life in the human world, and therefore cooked meals were used as sacrificial offerings.
