炮 is composed of 火 (fire) and 包 (bag, wrap). 包 is the picture of a fetus being wrapped inside the fetal membrane, so 炮 originally refers to a cooking method of wrapping food in mud and then burning it on fire. In addition, bomb in ancient China is an hollow iron sphere stuffed with explosives, so 炮 also means cannon.
