燴

braise

燴 is composed of 火 (fire) and 會 (gather). 會 originally depicted a covered container holding minced meat. Adding broth or sauce to the container and slowly simmering the minced meat over a low fire came to be known as 燴—thus representing braising, stewing, or cooking ingredients together in a rich sauce.

Vocabulary of 燴
