禦

禦 is composed of 御 (govern) and 示 (reveal). 御 means to command or to lead, while 示 carries the meaning of praying to the spirits or deities. Therefore, 禦 conveys the idea of offering sacrifices and praying to the gods in order to prevent disasters. Later, it came to mean to resist or to ward off.
