禘 is composed of the radical 示 (altar) and 帝 (emperor). 示 is a pictograph of an altar, while 帝 is a pictograph of a bundle of firewood, originally denoting a sacrificial ritual of burning firewood. As 帝 later derived other meanings, the character 禘 was coined to restore its original sense.
