旌 is composed of a variant of 㫃 (fluttering flags) and 生 (life). 㫃 depicts the appearance of banners and flags fluttering on a pole, while 生 is a pictograph of a plant sprouting from the earth and means to show or to appear. Therefore, 旌 conveys the idea of an elaborately decorated banner, and also means to indicate or to display.
