旁
side
旁 is composed of a variant of 凡 (ordinary) and 方 (square). 凡 is a pictograph of a hollow vessel, while 方 depicts a criminal bound in wooden shackles. Thus, 旁 originally referred to the wooden stock around a prisoner's neck. The wooden stock has a hole in the middle, resembling a frame, which extended to mean the side or lateral edge.
