斿 is composed of a variant of 㫃 (fluttering flags) and 子 (child). 㫃 depicts the appearance of banners and flags fluttering on a pole, while 子 indicates something small. The original meaning of 斿 is the small streamers or pendants on ancient banners. Later, it extended to the meaning of drifting or floating. Nowadays, 斿 is no longer used independently and only appears as a component in other characters.
