襟
overlap of gown, chest
襟 is composed of 衣 (clothing) and 禁 (prohibit). 禁 carries the meaning of restraint or taboo. In ancient times, the opening part of clothing was located at the chest, considered off-limits to others’ touch to prevent the garment from coming apart. This is represented by 襟, which later extended to mean the chest or front of a garment.
