襯 is composed of the radical 衣 (clothing) and 親 (close, intimate). 親 carries the meaning of closeness or intimacy, so adding 衣 forms 襯 to denote clothing worn close to the body. When two things are closely aligned, they can be compared or contrasted, thus 襯 also extends to mean comparison or contrast.
