裡 is composed of the BuShou of 衣 (clothes) and 里 (residence, hometown). 里 means the place where people live together, while 衣 is the picture of a clothes, which has the meaning of surrounding or encircling. In order to safeguard life and property, people will live together deep inside the places surrounded by natural barriers.
