裳 is composed of 尚 (esteem, judge) and 衣 (clothing). 尚 is a pictograph of an ancient tribunal, symbolizing an unshakable authority, thus carrying the meaning of fixed or unchanging. Originally, 裳 referred to everyday casual clothing, but later it came to specifically denote garments worn on the lower body. Since the lower body is constantly in motion, excessive decoration is impractical, making the style of lower garments more fixed compared to upper garments.
