輿 is composed of a variant of 舁 (lift) and 車 (vehicle). 舁 represents four hands and indicates lifting, while 車 denotes a means of transportation. Therefore, the original meaning of 輿 is a sedan chair carried by people, and later it also came to mean a vehicle. In addition, the ancients believed that the earth, like a vehicle, is capable of carrying all things extensively. From this, 輿 also means territory or domain.
