脈 is composed of the radical 肉 (flesh) and 𠂢 (tributary of river). 肉 represents the human body, while 𠂢 means a branch of a river. The blood vessels in the human body branch out densely like rivers. Therefore, the original meaning of 脈 is blood vessel, and later it came to broadly refer to the branches of all things.
