鑾
emperor
鑾 is composed of 䜌 (connection) and 金 (metal). Since 䜌 signifies being linked or connected and 金 represents metal, the original meaning of 鑾 refers to the metal ceremonial bells fitted onto ancient imperial carriages. Because these bells were closely tied to the state's ceremonial order and royal protocol, 鑾 later became a metonym for the emperor's carriage and even the emperor himself.
