鉤 is composed of 金 (metal) and 句 (sentence, hook). 句 depicts two curved tools connected by a clasp or ring. As 句 later developed other meanings and because such tools were often made of metal, 鉤 was created to represent a curved, hook-shaped implement with a connecting function.
